Schmitt Issues Statement on Disaster Budget
HARRISBURG – In response to passage of a state budget that sets a new record for government spending in Pennsylvania, Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Altoona), who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement:
“Unfortunately, House Democrats reached a new milestone in Pennsylvania today when they passed their record-breaking $47.6 billion budget. This comes at high costs that will see the state’s surplus depleted in equally record time. It also means our children and their grandchildren will be left to pay for the mistakes made today.
“Growing government through increased spending only serves to harm Pennsylvania. Instead of spending taxpayer dollars on new programs that will lead to more spending in the years to come, House Republicans put forth a viable alternative. We sought to return money to taxpayers in the form of tax breaks so that each Pennsylvanian would reap the benefits. It is extremely disappointing that our plan wasn’t brought to fruition. The best way to grow the state’s economy is to put more money into the hands of consumers, who would spend as they choose. Rather, the budget passed today will lead to tax hikes down the road.”
