ALTOONA – Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Altoona) has been appointed to serve as the Republican chairman of three subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Railroads under the House Transportation Committee.
“As the son and grandson of men who worked on the railroad in the rail-rich history town of Altoona, I am well aware of the critical role trains play in the prosperity of our state’s economy,” Schmitt said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on issues related to Pennsylvania’s rail system to ensure it is a viable and safe means for transporting people and cargo across the state.”
Schmitt has been working to improve safety conditions on Pennsylvania’s rails and holding rail companies accountable since the devastating train disaster in Ohio, just miles from the border with Pennsylvania. As subcommittee chairman, he looks forwarding to continuing those efforts.
Schmitt will also serve as Republican chairman of the Subcommittee on Fiscal Policy under the House Appropriations Committee and as Republican chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Integrity and Transparency under the House State Government Committee.
Earlier this session, Schmitt reintroduced
House Bill 99 to provide much-needed updates to the state’s Right-to-Know Law, the first updates since it was enacted about 15 years ago.
“These subcommittee chairmanships will allow me to have a much louder voice in Harrisburg and will give the residents I am privileged to represent a larger platform to have their ideals and ideas heard,” Schmitt said.
